What is an electric diaphragm pump?

In electric diaphragm pumps, the diaphragms are actuated not by compressed air but by the movement provided by an electric motor through a gearbox and mechanical linkage. This way, the advantages of air-operated pumps — such as self-priming, ability to handle difficult liquids, and gentle pumping — are achieved without requiring a compressor. They are preferred in facilities where there is no compressed air line, or in continuous-duty applications where air consumption is costly.

Advantages

Plastic-bodied models stand out for acids and corrosive liquids, while metal-bodied models excel with oils and viscous products. Models described as "valved" are designed for high flow rates and liquids containing solid particles.

Selection and safety

The pump's flow rate and pressure must be selected according to the properties of the liquid to be transferred. Because electric diaphragm pumps are positive-displacement type, pressure can rise rapidly if the discharge line is completely closed; therefore, a safety valve or pressure limiter is recommended to protect the line. The diaphragm and ball materials in contact with the liquid must be compatible with the fluid. In flammable environments, check whether the motor is suitable for that environment.

Maintenance

Diaphragms and check valve balls are wearing parts; they should be inspected if a drop in flow rate or a leak is observed. The gearbox oil level and motor connections should also be reviewed during periodic maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose electric or air-operated?

If your facility has a compressed air supply and the working environment is flammable, air-operated pumps are advantageous; if there is no air line and continuous operation is required, electric pumps are the better choice.

Can it run dry?

The diaphragm design can withstand brief dry running; still avoid prolonged dry operation.

Is the flow rate adjustable?

Depending on the model, flow rate can be adjusted via motor speed or a valve; consult the manufacturer's information for use with a variable frequency drive (VFD).

Are single-phase and three-phase options available?

Depending on the model, it operates on 220 V single-phase or 380 V three-phase supply.

Does flow rate decrease with viscous liquids?

Yes; flow rate decreases as the liquid becomes thicker. Keeping the suction line short and wide reduces this loss.
