What does a pool pump do?
A pool pump draws pool water through the skimmer and main drain, passes it through the filter, and returns the cleaned water to the pool. This continuous circulation is the foundation of keeping the water clear and distributing chemicals evenly throughout the pool. Most pool pumps include a pre-filter basket that catches leaves, hair, and coarse debris, protecting both the pump's impeller and the sand filter.

Pump selection
Two factors are decisive when selecting a pool pump: pool volume and the flow rate permitted by the filter. The goal is to pass the entire pool water through the filter within a set period (turnover rate); this period is determined by the intensity of pool use. The pump's flow rate must remain within the range recommended by the filter; an overpowered pump reduces filter efficiency and increases energy consumption. Whether the pump will be installed above or below the water level determines whether a self-priming model is required.
Installation and maintenance
Install the pump near the filter unit, in a ventilated location protected from rain and direct sunlight. Empty the pre-filter basket regularly; a full basket reduces flow rate and causes the pump to overheat. Draining the pump and checking the lid gasket during the winter months will help you be prepared for the next season.
Frequently asked questions
How many hours a day should a pool pump run?
Running time depends on pool volume, pump flow rate, and usage intensity; the goal is for the entire pool water to pass through the filter a sufficient number of times during the day.
Can any pump be used in a saltwater pool?
Pumps made from materials specified as suitable for saltwater should be preferred; check the product description.
Are there low-noise pool pumps?
Yes; models described as low-speed or low-noise are more suitable for installations close to living areas.
When is a three-phase pump required?
High-power pumps for large pools run on three-phase supply; single-phase models are sufficient for most residential pools.
