What is an ornamental pond pump?
Ornamental pond pumps are small submersible pumps used to circulate water in garden ponds, ponds, waterfall, and fountain setups. Moving the water creates a visual effect and also helps oxygenate the water, reducing odor and algae problems that can develop in stagnant water. Models with low energy consumption are preferred since they run for extended periods.
How to choose
- Flow rate (L/h): Determined by the width of the waterfall and the desired volume of water, or by the size of the fountain.
- Head (meters): Indicates how high the water will rise above the pump level; it must exceed the height of the waterfall or fountain.
- Fountain nozzles: Some models include nozzles for different water patterns.
- Adjustable flow rate: Allows the water flow to be adjusted to suit the desired appearance.
Values such as "1.6 meters, 1,600 liters/hour" in product names represent the pump's max. head and max. flow rate separately; both cannot be achieved simultaneously.
Installation and maintenance
Place the pump on a stone or base on the bottom of the pond, away from silt. Clean the intake screen regularly to remove algae and leaves; a clogged screen reduces flow rate and strains the motor. If there is a risk of freezing in winter, remove the pump from the water, clean it, and store it. The pump's electrical connection must be made from an outdoor-rated circuit with residual current protection.
Frequently asked questions
Can an ornamental pond pump run continuously?
These pumps are designed for extended operation; however, the motor must always remain submerged in water.
What happens if the pump runs dry?
If the water level drops and the pump is exposed to air, it may overheat and fail; top up evaporated water regularly.
Can it be used in an aquarium?
Small models can also be used in aquariums; you can check aquarium pumps for more precise flow rate control.
Is it safe for ponds with fish?
Using parts that come into contact with water made from suitable materials and fitting a screen over the intake provides safe use for fish.
What flow rate is needed for a waterfall?
A higher flow rate is required as the waterfall gets wider. The pump's head must be high enough to deliver sufficient flow rate while reaching the top of the waterfall.
Can the pump cable be extended?
Making a splice in outdoor cables is risky from a water and electrical safety standpoint. If the cable length is insufficient, use a waterproof, outdoor-rated junction box or choose a model with a longer cable.
