What is a vibration motor?
Vibration motors are specialized electric motors that produce centrifugal force while rotating — thanks to unbalanced (eccentric) weights mounted on their shaft ends — and transfer this force as vibration to the structure to which they are attached. They are used in applications such as vibrating screens, feeders, and conveyors; preventing material bridging in silos and hoppers; compacting concrete molds; and casting and test tables.
Selection criteria
- Centrifugal force: This is the vibration force produced by the motor; it is selected according to the weight of the structure and material to be vibrated.
- Speed: 3,000 rpm models produce higher-frequency vibration; 1,500 rpm models produce lower-frequency, larger-amplitude vibration.
- Power supply: Single-phase motors are used for smaller models, three-phase motors for larger ones.
- Mounting dimensions: The base hole spacing and bolt diameters must be compatible with the mounting surface.
Mini vibration motors are designed for small hoppers and light-duty applications, while larger models are designed for heavy-duty screens and feeders.
Adjusting vibration force
On most vibration motors, the vibration force can be adjusted by changing the angle of the eccentric weights at the shaft ends relative to each other. This adjustment must be made identically at both ends of the motor. For screens requiring linear vibration, two motors can be used together rotating in opposite directions.
Installation and maintenance
Since vibration motors are subjected to continuous vibration, the tightness of the mounting bolts is critical; high-strength bolts must be used and tightening torques must be checked at regular intervals. The motor cable must be flexible and properly secured to prevent damage from vibration. Bearing lubrication intervals must be monitored according to the manufacturer's instructions. The motor must be supplied with appropriate thermal overload protection.
Frequently asked questions
Can it be used as a silo vibrator?
Yes; it is widely used to facilitate material flow at silo and hopper outlets.
How can vibration force be increased?
The force can be changed by adjusting the angle of the eccentric weights. The adjustment must be made equally at both ends.
Are single-phase vibration motors available?
Yes; single-phase models are also available in the category.
Why do bolts come loose?
Continuous vibration can loosen bolts. Using appropriate bolts and performing regular checks reduces this risk.
Why are two motors run in opposite directions?
Running two motors in opposite directions causes their forces to combine and generate vibration in a single linear direction.
Where are the other motors?
For standard motors, see the electric motors category.
