What is an asynchronous electric motor?
Asynchronous (induction) electric motors are the most widely used motor type in industry, valued for their robust construction, low maintenance requirements, and cost-effectiveness. Pumps, fans, compressors, conveyors, mixers, and machine tools are among the many machines that run on these motors. The category includes single-phase and three-phase models in various power ratings and speeds, used as foot-mounted and fan motors.
Selection criteria
- Power: Determined by the power required by the driven machine, the difficulty of starting, and the operating duration.
- Speed: 3,000 rpm (two-pole) motors are common in pumps and fans requiring high speed; 1,500 rpm (four-pole) motors are common in applications requiring higher torque.
- Supply voltage: 220 V single-phase or 220/380 V three-phase; for three-phase motors, star and delta connections are made according to the supply voltage.
- Mounting type: Foot-mounted motors are fixed to the floor; flange-mounted motors are attached directly to the machine body.
- Efficiency class: IE3 class motors reduce energy costs over long operating periods.
When replacing an existing motor, the frame size, shaft diameter and length, flange dimensions, and terminal box position must be compared.
Capacitor in single-phase motors
Single-phase asynchronous motors require a capacitor for starting and running. When the capacitor fails, the motor hums but does not rotate, or rotates very weakly. For replacement, a motor capacitor with the same capacitance (µF) and voltage rating must be used.
Installation and maintenance
The motor's wiring diagram is found on the nameplate or terminal box cover; connections must be made according to this diagram with the power disconnected. The motor must be protected with a thermal overload relay and appropriate fuses. Coupling alignment and belt tension must be set correctly, and the cooling fan and fins must be kept clean. Increasing bearing noise and vibration indicate that maintenance is due.
Frequently asked questions
When is star or delta connection used?
It is determined by the voltage values on the motor nameplate and the supply voltage. An incorrect connection will damage the motor.
Can a single-phase motor run on a three-phase supply?
A single-phase motor can be operated by supplying it from one phase and the neutral of a three-phase supply.
What does motor frame size mean?
It is the standard dimension that defines the motor's shaft height and mounting dimensions. The same size must be selected when replacing a motor.
Are motors sold as fan motors any different?
Fan motors have a shaft and mounting structure suitable for attaching a fan blade.
The motor hums but does not rotate — why?
Capacitor failure in single-phase motors and phase loss in three-phase motors are the most common causes.
What should I do for higher power ratings?
