What does a motor capacitor do?
Single-phase (220 V) induction motors need a capacitor to generate a rotating magnetic field from a single-phase supply. The capacitor shifts the phase of the current in the motor's auxiliary winding, enabling the motor to start and run efficiently. Single-phase pump motors, booster pumps, fans, compressors, and many small machines operate in this way.
Fault symptoms
- Motor hums but does not rotate
- Motor starts turning when spun by hand
- Starting is very weak or slow
- Motor runs hotter than normal
- Swelling or leakage visible on the capacitor body
These symptoms may indicate a capacitor fault; however, winding or bearing faults can show similar symptoms, so a thorough check should be carried out.
Selecting the correct capacitor
The capacitance value (µF) of the new capacitor must be the same as the old one; this value is printed on the capacitor or the motor nameplate. The voltage rating must be at least equal to that of the old capacitor. The connection type (with cable leads or terminals) and body dimensions must suit the mounting location. A capacitor with the wrong capacitance will cause the motor to overheat or fail to produce sufficient torque. The model in this category is rated at 40 µF for pump motors.
Safe replacement
A capacitor can retain an electrical charge for some time even after the motor's power supply has been disconnected. Before replacement, the electrical supply must be disconnected and the capacitor terminals must be discharged using an appropriate method. Connections must be made in accordance with the motor's wiring diagram. If you are not confident about this procedure, seek assistance from an electrician.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the µF value of a capacitor stated?
It is stated on the label on the capacitor body or on the motor nameplate.
Can a capacitor with a higher µF value be fitted?
This is not recommended; a capacitance that differs from the motor's design value will cause overheating and efficiency loss.
Why do capacitors fail?
Excessive temperature, voltage fluctuations, and aging reduce a capacitor's capacitance.
What is the difference between a start capacitor and a run capacitor?
A start capacitor is in circuit only at the moment of starting; a run capacitor remains in circuit while the motor is running.
Where can I find a capacitor for a submersible pump?
In single-phase submersible motors, the capacitor is usually located in the control box; you can also browse the pump control panels category.
Can I replace the capacitor myself?
It can be replaced while observing electrical safety rules. If you are not confident, seek assistance from a technician.
Can a capacitor trip a circuit breaker?
A short-circuited capacitor can trip a circuit breaker. In this case, the capacitor and motor windings should both be checked.
