Why is a hot water booster pump needed?
Hot water from a rooftop solar storage tank often flows by gravity alone. As a result, hot water pressure remains low — especially on upper floors and in apartments close to the tank — and the pressure difference between the hot water and the incoming cold water causes uneven flow at faucets. A hot water booster pump connects to the hot water line, raises this pressure, and provides comfortable water use in the shower and at the sink.
Key features
- Flow sensor: Automatically starts the pump when a tap is opened and stops it when closed.
- Temperature resistance: The casing and gaskets are made from materials suitable for hot water; the maximum allowable water temperature is specified for each model.
- Low-noise operation: Low-noise motor and vibration-dampening design for residential use.
- Dry-run protection: Stops the pump when the tank runs dry, protecting the motor.
- Small expansion vessel: Some models include a small tank that prevents the pump from cycling on and off frequently.
Installation recommendations
The pump is connected to the hot water line coming from the solar storage tank, in the direction indicated by the flow arrow. To isolate the pump during maintenance or potential faults, valves should be installed on both sides of the pump, and a bypass line added if necessary. For rooftop or balcony installations where there is a risk of freezing, the pump should be placed in a protected location. To balance cold and hot water pressures, some systems may use a pump on both lines; in this case, selecting both together makes compatibility easier.
Frequently asked questions
Can a hot water booster pump be used with cold water?
Most models can operate with both hot and cold water; both uses are stated in the product description. However, do not use pumps designed for cold water only with hot water.
Why does the pump start and stop on its own?
Minor leaks in the system or a dripping faucet can trigger the flow sensor. Fixing the leaks or adding a small expansion vessel resolves this issue.
Can it be used with a combi boiler?
In combi boilers, hot water is produced by heating cold water from the mains. Therefore, if there is a pressure problem in a combi boiler system, the pump is usually placed at the cold water inlet; you can also check the pressure-boosting pumps category for a suitable model.
Which capacity should I choose?
Consider the number of showers and faucets that will be in use simultaneously. The flow rate on the product page shows how many liters per minute the pump can deliver.
