What Is a Roof Fan?

Fans mounted outside a flue that expel smoke through the chimney are called flue fans or roof fans. Flue fans are used with solid-fuel appliances, fireplaces, stoves, ovens, and barbecues.

Fan Housing and Impeller

  • Highly corrosion-resistant electrostatic powder-coated sheet metal housing in roof-type fans,
  • Backward-curved blade impeller dynamically tested to ISO 1940 standards,
  • Compliant with EN 60335-2-80 standards,
  • Low noise level

Motor

  • High-quality production without manual intervention on high-technology CNC machines,
  • Aluminum-finned motor housing with high thermal conductivity,
  • Rotor balanced to ISO 1940 standards for extended bearing service life,
  • Insulation class F with a high operating range for windings from −40 °C to +70 °C,

Applications

  • Designed for use in duct and pipe applications.
  • In restaurants and eateries,
  • In general and industrial buildings
  • In warehouses, stores, and depots,
  • In garages and public buildings
  • In commercial greenhouses;
  • In large workshops,
  • In paint shops,
  • Suitable for use in factories.

Points to Consider When Selecting a Fan

4 parameters should be considered when selecting a fan:
  • Required Air Flow Rate
  • Pressure Losses
  • Acceptable Noise Level
  • Electrical Power Connection Type
The air change rate required for the space to be ventilated depends on the intended use of the space, the number of people and items inside, and their activity levels. The table alongside shows the recommended air change coefficients for different types of spaces.

Environment Air Change Coefficient
Auditoriums 6-8
Paint Ovens 25-50
Vault Rooms 3-6
Cinemas and Theaters 5-8
Commercial Kitchens 15-30
Foundries 8-15
Gymnasiums 4-6
Laundries 10-20
Indoor Swimming Pools 3-4
Restaurants 8-12
Conference Rooms 6-8
Waiting Rooms 4-6
Copy Rooms 10-15
Machine Rooms 10-40
Shops 4-8
Dry Cleaning 5-15
General Manufacturing Areas 4-8
Hospitals 8-12
Laboratories 8-15
Normal Activity (non-smoking) 29 m³/h
Normal Activity (smoking) 58 m³/h
Light Activity 45 m³/h
Heavy Activity (industrial workspaces) 60 m³/h

Per-person air volumes in living and working spaces based on activity level can help determine the required air flow rate.

Based on the information provided above, the required air flow rate is determined as follows.

  • Q [m³/h] = Air change rate (1 hour) * Room volume (m³)

Or

  • Q [m³/h] = Number of persons × Air flow rate required per person
After determining the required airflow for the space, a suitable duct design should be prepared (taking noise and air velocity criteria into account) and pressure losses should be calculated. Depending on the environment in which the fan will operate, the fan type (axial, radial, roof, smoke exhaust, etc.) should be decided, and the appropriate fan should be selected from the relevant fan curve based on the determined flow rate–static pressure pair. To briefly illustrate the above and the table with an example: an office has 5 employees, a ceiling height of 2.6 m, and a floor area of 50 m², giving a volume of 2.6×50=130 m³. The air change rate value given for offices in the air change rate table was 4–8. Let us take an average of 5. 130×5=650 m³/h of air is required. If we assume normal activity levels in the office, 5 people × 29 m³ = 145 m³ of air is needed for the employees, giving a total air requirement of 650 + 145 = 795 m³/h.

Fan selection is made according to this flow rate requirement.

After completing the flow calculations, the installation location for the fan must be determined. Where will the fan be mounted? On the ceiling, wall, flue, ventilation duct, etc.? Another consideration is the voltage of the electrical supply to the fan. Continuing with our office example: fans in offices are generally mounted on walls or glass. If a residential electrical supply is to be used, a single-phase fan should be preferred. If the application is in an industrial setting, a fan operating on three-phase (380 V) power should be used.
