What are roof and chimney fans used for?

Roof fans are weather-resistant aspirators used to expel stale air from inside a building through the roof. They are commonly used for exhaust in kitchen, toilet, and bathroom shafts, warehouses, workshops, and sports halls. Chimney fans are used where flue draft is insufficient — for example in fireplaces — to prevent smoke from blowing back indoors.

Safety notice

Adding a fan to flues serving natural gas, LPG, or solid-fuel appliances directly affects the combustion and flue system of those appliances. Incorrect installation can cause toxic gases such as carbon monoxide to flow back into living spaces. For this reason, only fans specifically manufactured for combustion gas extraction and rated for high temperatures should be used on flues that carry flue gases, and the installation must be assessed by a qualified expert. A powerful exhaust fan in a room containing gas appliances can also disrupt the flue draft of those appliances.

Selection and installation

When selecting a roof fan, evaluate flow rate, the resistance of the shaft or duct to be connected, and noise level. The fan must be securely mounted on a solid base or flue cap on the roof, and rainwater ingress must be prevented. Speed-controlled models offer the ability to adjust flow rate as needed and provide energy savings. Safe access for maintenance must be ensured for roof fans.

Frequently asked questions

Does a chimney fan prevent smoke blowback?

It can help by supporting insufficient flue draft. However, flue design and blockages should also be checked.

Can a roof fan operate in rain?

Models designed for outdoor use are manufactured with rain protection. Water sealing must be observed during installation.

What is the advantage of a horizontal-discharge fan?

It distributes air horizontally, reducing rain ingress on the rooftop and making dispersion easier.

How is speed controlled?

On compatible models, speed can be adjusted using a speed control regulator.

Can a fan be installed on a natural gas flue?

This must only be done with appropriate equipment and after assessment by a qualified expert. Adding a fan arbitrarily can be dangerous.

Are there more powerful exhaust solutions available?

For locations requiring high flow rates, you can browse centrifugal and radial fans.
