What Is a Dust Extraction Fan?

Industries require specialized dust extraction fans in their manufacturing, production, or industrial facilities to reduce contamination, keep the working environment clean, and improve safer working conditions for workers. Different industrial processes generate dust particles of varying sizes; some settle while others remain suspended in the air. Typical dust extraction fans are fan systems that draw or filter dirty air. Depending on the type of dust produced by the industrial process, different fan equipment is used to perform different dust collection tasks. Centrifugal fans can handle high-volume dust loads and are therefore widely used to capture dust in industrial processes.

Applications

  • In areas where dusty air needs to be exhausted
  • In duct applications where axial fans provide insufficient pressure and flow rate,
  • General and industrial buildings,
  • Carpentry workshops,
  • Polishing machines
  • Paint shops,
  • Factories,
  • Environments with dust and vapor,
  • Cooling of industrial machinery
  • (Welding machines, transformers, compressors…)*

Fan Housing and Impeller

  • Radial casing made from cold-drawn high-quality DKP sheet metal,
  • High corrosion resistance with environmentally friendly electrostatic epoxy powder coating; galvanized forward-curved radial impeller dynamically tested per ISO 1940 standard; manufactured in accordance with EN 60335-2-80
  • High pressure and flow rate values through inlet nozzle application,
  • Air inlet protected with a guard against foreign object ingress **
  • Sturdy and neat casing structure with special clinch-type casing assembly,
  • Low noise level,
  • Right- and left-hand orientation options for installation in any desired direction,

  • Aluminum-finned motor casing with high thermal conductivity,
  • Rotor balanced to ISO 1940 standards for extended bearing service life,
  • Wide operating range for coils with insulation class F: −40° to +70°;* 230 V / 50 Hz single-phase fan motor **
  • 400 V / 50 Hz, three-phase fan motor
  • Standards-compliant certified components,
  • IP 54 protection class (IP 55 production option available on request)
  • Variable frequency drive (VFD) control capability for three-phase fans

Things to Consider When Selecting a Fan;

4 parameters should be considered when selecting a fan:
  • Required Air Flow Rate
  • Pressure Losses
  • Acceptable Noise Level
  • Electrical Power Connection Type
The air changes required for the space to be ventilated depend on the intended use of the space, the number of occupants and objects inside, and their activities. The table alongside provides the required air change rate coefficients for different environments.
Environment Air Change Rate
Auditoriums 6-8
Paint Ovens 25-50
Vault Rooms 3-6
Cinemas and Theaters 5-8
Commercial Kitchens 15-30
Foundries 8-15
Gymnasiums 4-6
Laundries 10-20
Indoor Swimming Pools 3-4
Restaurants 8-12
Conference Rooms 6-8
Waiting Rooms 4-6
Copy Rooms 10-15
Machine Rooms 10-40
Shops 4-8
Dry Cleaning 5-15
General Manufacturing Areas 4-8
Hospitals 8-12
Laboratories 8-15
Normal Activity (non-smoking) 29 m³/h
Normal Activity (smoking) 58 m³/h
Light Activity 45 m³/h
Heavy Activity (industrial work areas) 60 m³/h

The amount of air per person in living and working spaces depending on activity level can help determine the required air flow rate.

Based on the information provided above, the required air flow rate is determined as follows.
  • Q [ m³/h ] = Air change rate coefficient (1 hour) × Space volume (m³)
  • Or
  • Q [ m³/h ] = Number of people × Air flow rate required per person
After determining the required air flow rate for the space, a suitable duct design (taking into account noise and air velocity criteria) should be made and pressure losses calculated. Depending on the environment in which the fan will operate, the fan type (axial, radial, roof, smoke extraction, etc.) should be decided upon, and the appropriate fan should be selected from the correct fan curve based on the determined flow rate–static pressure pair. To illustrate briefly with an example: an office has 5 employees, a ceiling height of 2.6 m, and a floor area of 50 m²; it therefore has a volume of 2.6 × 50 = 130 m³. The air change coefficient from the table for an office is 4–8; let us take 5. 130 × 5 = 650 m³/h of air is needed. Assuming normal activity in the office, 5 persons × 29 m³ = 145 m³ of air is needed for the occupants, giving a total requirement of 650 + 145 = 795 m³/h.

Fan selection is also made based on this flow rate requirement.

After completing the flow rate calculations, the installation location of the fan should be determined. Where will the fan be mounted — ceiling, wall, chimney, or ventilation duct? Another consideration is the voltage of the electrical supply to the fan. Continuing with our office example: fans in offices are generally mounted on a wall or glass. If a domestic electricity supply is used, a single-phase fan should be preferred. If it is to be used in an industrial setting, a fan operating on three-phase (380 V) power should be used.
