What is a gear pump?
Gear pumps are positive displacement pumps in which two intermeshing gears carry fluid from the inlet to the outlet through the spaces between their teeth as they rotate. Because a fixed volume is displaced per revolution, their flow rate is not greatly affected by pressure, providing a steady flow with viscous fluids where centrifugal pumps struggle. They are widely used for transferring engine oil, hydraulic oil, diesel, fuel oil, vegetable oils, and similar viscous fluids.
Types and features
- Helical gear pumps: Operate more quietly and with less vibration thanks to their angled teeth.
- Electric gear oil pumps: Portable models integrated with a 12 V or 220 V motor.
- Flanged models: For fixed installations and high flow rates.
- Soft-packed models: For heavy-duty applications with an easy-to-maintain packing seal design.
Gear pumps are self-priming; however, having a small amount of fluid in the casing before starting helps lubricate the gears.
Selection and use
Flow rate, pressure, and fluid viscosity must all be considered together when selecting a pump; as viscosity increases, the pump speed should be reduced and motor power increased. Gear pumps are not suitable for fluids containing abrasives, sand, or solid particles; a Y-strainer must be fitted on the suction line. Because they are positive displacement pumps, pressure rises rapidly when the discharge line is closed; a relief (by-pass) valve must be used to protect the line. Running the pump dry for extended periods causes wear to the gears and bearings.
Maintenance
Seal leakage, increased noise, and a drop in flow rate indicate that maintenance is needed. On soft-packed models, packing pressure should be adjusted to allow slight leakage. After use, it is recommended to flush the pump if the fluid thickens or freezes.
Frequently asked questions
Can a gear pump be used with water?
Because water has low lubricity, gear pumps are generally preferred for oil and viscous fluids; centrifugal pumps are more suitable for water.
Can it be used for gasoline transfer?
For flammable and volatile fluids such as gasoline, only pumps documented as suitable for that use must be used.
How is the flow rate adjusted?
Flow rate on gear pumps is controlled by adjusting motor speed; a by-pass line should be used instead of throttling with a valve.
Where are 12 V models used?
They provide a practical solution for oil and diesel transfer using a battery in vehicles, boats, and construction machinery.
Can very thick fluids such as molasses or honey be pumped?
Pump and motor selection for very high-viscosity fluids must be made according to the manufacturer's charts; feel free to contact us specifying the fluid.
