What does a brine pump do?

In olive processing facilities, brine is continuously moved from one place to another during the filling, emptying, and circulation of tanks. Because salt water causes rapid corrosion in ordinary metal pumps, pumps made from salt-resistant materials must be used for this purpose. Brine pumps are intended for the needs of olive and pickle producers, fish processing plants, and other businesses that work with salt water.

The flow rate (m³/h), head (m), and suction lift values stated in product names indicate the operating limits of the pump; compare these with your tank heights and hose lengths when making your selection.

Usage recommendations

After each use in brine transfer, flushing the pump with clean water prevents salt crystals from accumulating in the casing and mechanical seal. Fitting a strainer on the suction line prevents olive pieces and leaves from entering the pump. Running the pump dry damages the mechanical seal; turn the pump off in time as the tank empties. Food-grade hose must be used on lines that come into contact with food.

Precautions for diesel transfer

Diesel transfer pumps are for diesel fuel and oils only; they must not be used for petrol transfer. When using pumps at fixed storage facilities, connect the pump to a grounded outlet and keep away from sources of sparks during transfer.

Frequently asked questions

Can a brine pump be used for clean water?

Yes; a pump rated for salt water will also work with clean water.

Will a brine pump crush the olives?

The pump is designed for liquid transfer; passing olives through the pump is not recommended — use a strainer on the suction side.

Can a diesel pump be used with brine?

It should not be used if its materials are not suitable for salt water.

Is there a plastic-body alternative?

You can also browse the plastic-body pumps category for salt water and acids.

What does suction lift mean?

It is the approximate height from which the pump can draw liquid from a tank located below it.

At what temperature does a brine pump operate?

The permitted liquid temperature varies by model; do not exceed the limit stated in the product details. Check this value specifically if the process involves hot brine.

Why does the pump's flow rate decrease over time?

Accumulation of salt crystals and sediment in the casing and strainer reduces the flow rate. Regular cleaning and strainer inspection help the pump maintain its original performance.
