What is a capsule diaphragm pressure gauge?
Capsule diaphragm pressure gauges are instruments capable of measuring very low pressures using a capsule formed by two thin metal diaphragms welded together. When pressure is applied inside the capsule, it expands slightly and this movement is transmitted to the pointer. They were developed for millibar (mbar) level pressures that standard Bourdon tube pressure gauges cannot measure accurately. Due to the capsule construction, these gauges are used for dry gas and air measurements; they are not suitable for liquids.
Applications
- Monitoring line pressure in natural gas and LPG pipelines
- Gas pressure adjustment in burners and boilers
- Pressure monitoring in ventilation ducts and at fan outlets
- Differential pressure monitoring in clean rooms and filter systems
- Low-pressure measurement in laboratory and test setups
Selection criteria
The measurement range should be selected so it is not exceeded by the pressure being measured and allows easy reading; the model in this category covers the 0–25 mbar range. The dial diameter is determined by readability from the mounting location. The connection position (bottom or back) and thread size must match the installation. Equipment and fittings to be used in gas lines must be confirmed as suitable for that application.
Installation and safety
All connection and measurement work on gas lines must be carried out by qualified personnel in accordance with the relevant safety regulations. The pressure gauge must not be connected to a point that may be exposed to excessive pressure; the capsule can be permanently damaged by pressures well above the measurement range. After installation, the sealing of connection points must be verified using appropriate methods.
Frequently asked questions
Can a capsule pressure gauge be used with water?
No; capsule diaphragm pressure gauges are for gas and air. Standard pressure gauges must be used for liquid measurements.
What is the difference between mbar and bar?
1 bar equals 1,000 mbar; the mbar scale is used for accurate readings of very low pressures.
Is it suitable for measuring combi boiler gas pressure?
Capsule pressure gauges with the correct range are used for gas pressure measurement; the procedure must be carried out by a qualified technician.
What happens if the capsule is damaged?
The pointer will not return to zero or will display an incorrect value; in this case the pressure gauge must be replaced.
Why does dial diameter matter?
A larger dial makes reading from a distance easier and more precise.
Can differential pressure be measured?
Differential pressure measurement requires special dual-inlet instruments; note that this model has a single inlet.
