What is a pressure gauge?
A pressure gauge is a measuring instrument that measures the pressure in a line or tank and displays it on a dial. It is used to monitor pump cut-in and cut-out pressures in booster pump systems, to check pressure in compressor and air lines, and to monitor working pressure in hydraulic systems and industrial processes. In most mechanical pressure gauges, a curved metal tube (Bourdon tube) that tries to straighten as pressure increases moves the pointer.
Types of pressure gauges
- Glycerin-filled pressure gauges: The dial is filled with glycerin; prevents pointer flutter in lines with vibration and pulsation, and protects the mechanism.
- Dry pressure gauges: An economical solution for vibration-free, steady-pressure applications.
- Contact (precision) pressure gauges: Open and close an electrical contact at set pressure values to provide an alarm or control signal.
- Capsule diaphragm pressure gauges: Measure very low pressures (mbar) for gas and air applications.
- Filter condition indicators: Show the clogging status of hydraulic return filters.
Choosing the right pressure gauge
When selecting the measurement range, the working pressure should not be too close to the top value on the dial; keeping the working pressure between approximately the midpoint and two-thirds of the scale both makes reading easier and extends the instrument's service life. The connection position is selected based on the mounting location: bottom-connection models are suitable for vertical pipes, while back-connection models are suitable for panel and instrument surfaces. The dial diameter (such as 50, 63, 100, or 160 mm) is determined by legibility requirements. The connection thread (1/4 or 1/2 inch) must be compatible with the existing installation.
Installation and use
The pressure gauge should be tightened with a wrench on the hexagonal section below the threaded connection, not on the body. A snubber or valve can be fitted ahead of the pressure gauge on lines with pulsating pressure. On steam lines, the pressure gauge should be connected via a siphon filled with condensate. Pressure gauges showing dial damage, moisture, or a pointer that does not return to zero should be replaced.
Frequently asked questions
Which pressure gauge is suitable for a booster pump?
Generally, a glycerin-filled gauge in the 0–6 or 0–10 bar range with a 1/4 inch bottom connection is suitable.
What is the advantage of a glycerin-filled pressure gauge?
It prevents pointer flutter on lines with vibration and protects the internal mechanism against wear.
What does a contact pressure gauge do?
It provides a contact signal at set pressure values, enabling pump or alarm control.
Why doesn't the pressure gauge read zero?
The instrument may have been subjected to excessive pressure or the mechanism may be damaged; if accuracy is in doubt, replace it.
Which pressure gauge is suitable for natural gas?
Capsule diaphragm pressure gauges with an mbar scale are used for low gas pressures.
What does accuracy class mean?
It indicates the measurement error limit of the pressure gauge; the smaller the class value, the more precise the measurement.
