What does a room thermostat do?
A room thermostat is a control device that measures ambient temperature, switches off the combi boiler or boiler when the desired temperature is reached, and restarts it when the temperature drops. Instead of the boiler operating solely based on its own water temperature, it makes the boiler respond to the actual room temperature. This prevents the home from overheating, improves comfort, and reduces fuel consumption.
Room thermostat types
- Analog thermostats: Simple, economical models adjusted with a rotary dial.
- Digital thermostats: Display ambient and target temperature on screen; offer more precise adjustment.
- Wired models: Connected to the combi boiler by cable; suitable where cable routing is possible.
- Wireless models: The receiver unit is placed next to the combi boiler and the thermostat in the room; no cable required.
- Programmable models: Different temperatures can be set for different days and times; setting a lower temperature during hours when you are not home saves energy.
Where should the thermostat be installed?
The thermostat should be placed in the most frequently used living area of the home, on an interior wall at approximately eye level. Walls in direct sunlight, door and window frames, and heat sources such as radiators, televisions, and ovens nearby will distort the reading. The thermostatic valve on the radiator in the room where the thermostat is located must be left fully open; otherwise the thermostat may shut off the boiler before the room reaches the desired temperature.
Connecting to the combi boiler
The vast majority of combi boilers have a dedicated connection point for a room thermostat. The connection must be made in accordance with the device's manual and with the power off. On wireless models, the receiver unit is connected to the boiler's thermostat input and then paired with the thermostat.
Frequently asked questions
Will a room thermostat damage the combi boiler?
No; when connected correctly, it helps the boiler operate more consistently.
How long does the battery of a wireless thermostat last?
Battery life depends on the model and usage pattern; replace the batteries when the on-screen warning appears.
What temperature should I set?
It depends on personal comfort preferences; keep in mind that each degree lower reduces consumption.
Who are programmable models suitable for?
They offer high savings potential for households with regular hours when no one is home during the day.
What is the difference from boiler thermostats?
Boiler thermostats control water temperature; a room thermostat operates based on ambient temperature.
Does the thermostat affect the combi boiler's domestic hot water supply?
The room thermostat controls only the heating circuit; the boiler's supply of hot water to the taps continues independently of the thermostat.
