Types of sprayer machines
Sprayer machines (sprayers) are used to apply plant protection products, foliar fertilizers, and similar liquids uniformly to plants. They are essential equipment for combating diseases and pests in gardens, vineyards, greenhouses, and orchards. The category includes three main types for different levels of use:
- Mechanical lever (manual) sprayers: Pressure is generated by a lever; economical and practical for small areas.
- Battery-powered sprayers: The pump runs on a battery; provides constant pressure and extended use without fatigue.
- Petrol engine-driven backpack sprayers: For large areas and trees requiring high pressure and range.
Selection criteria
The size of the area to be sprayed and the height of the plants are the determining factors in selection: manual or battery-powered models are sufficient for small gardens, while engine-driven models are preferred for fruit trees and large vineyards. Tank capacity determines the area that can be sprayed per fill. Ergonomic back straps and a waist belt make carrying a full tank easier. Adjustable nozzles provide the correct spray pattern for different plants.
Safe spraying
Plant protection products must be used at the dose and in accordance with the instructions stated on the label. A mask, gloves, protective goggles, and appropriate work clothing must be worn during spraying. Spraying must not be carried out in windy conditions; drift of the spray toward water sources, beehives, and neighboring areas must be prevented. The pre-harvest interval stated on the label must be observed after spraying.
Maintenance
After each use, the tank must be emptied, filled with clean water, and the pump, hose, and nozzles flushed through. Remaining spray liquid must not be discharged into the environment; containers and residues must be disposed of in accordance with local regulations. Gaskets and filters must be checked regularly, and the machine must be stored in a dry, frost-free place.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a battery-powered sprayer run?
Operating time depends on battery capacity and the spray setting.
Can an engine-driven sprayer reach trees?
Thanks to high pressure and range, it can reach the upper parts of trees more easily.
Can the same machine be used for different chemicals?
Yes; however, the machine must be thoroughly cleaned between chemicals. Using a separate machine for herbicides is recommended.
What tank capacity should I choose?
It should be selected according to the area size and your carrying capacity.
What should I do if a nozzle gets blocked?
Remove the nozzle and rinse it with clean water; do not probe it with a hard object.
What do you recommend for indoor disinfection?
For enclosed spaces, see ULV disinfection devices.
