What is a vertical multistage pump?

Vertical multistage pumps are multistage centrifugal pumps with the motor at the top and the stages arranged vertically below it on a common axis. Because the inlet and outlet ports are located on the lower part of the casing at the same level and facing each other, the pump can be fitted directly inline in the pipework. As the number of stages increases, so does the head; this allows high pressure to be achieved in a small floor footprint.

Where are they used?

Fully stainless steel models are suitable for drinking water and hygiene-critical applications, while cast iron body or steel impeller models are suitable for general clean water applications.

Selection criteria

First, determine the flow rate you need (m³/h) and the total head. The numbers in product names generally indicate the pump's flow class and number of stages; within the same series, pressure increases as the number of stages increases. Single-phase (220 V) models are used at lower power ratings, while three-phase (380 V) models are used at medium and high power ratings. When used with a variable frequency drive (VFD), pressure can be kept constant and energy savings can be achieved.

Installation and maintenance

The pump must be mounted vertically on a flat, stable surface, and pipes must be supported so they do not impose any load on the pump. Before the first start-up, the pump casing must be filled with water and air must be bled through the air vent plug on top. Running the pump dry will damage the mechanical seal quickly. Seal leakage and bearing noise are the first signs that maintenance is needed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a vertical multistage pump and a submersible pump?

Vertical multistage pumps operate in a dry environment, above the pipeline; submersible pumps are lowered into the water.

Can it draw water by suction?

Vertical multistage pumps are generally not self-priming; they operate more efficiently in installations where water flows to the pump naturally. If suction is required, a foot valve must be used on the suction line.

When is a fully stainless steel model necessary?

It is preferred for applications requiring hygiene and durability, such as drinking water, food processing, and mildly corrosive liquids.

Is a variable frequency drive (VFD) mandatory?

It is not mandatory; however, in variable-demand systems it keeps pressure constant and reduces energy consumption.
