What is a horizontal non-bursting expansion vessel?
Horizontal non-burst expansion vessels are pressurized tanks with a fixed-membrane internal structure, oriented with their long axis horizontal and resting on feet on the floor. The horizontal body offers an advantage in boiler rooms with low ceilings, cabinet installations, and package systems where the pump and tank form a single unit. They are used as pressurized water storage in booster pump systems and as an expansion volume in heating systems.
Why choose a horizontal model?
- Low installation height: Suitable for spaces with limited ceiling height.
- Package installation: Models on which a pump or control equipment can be mounted form a compact booster pump unit.
- Stable footing: The footed body sits more steadily in vibration-prone environments.
- Easy maintenance: The connection port and air valve are in an easily accessible position.
Selection and use
Tank capacity is determined by the pump's flow rate and the permitted number of starts per hour in a booster pump application, or by the total water volume in the system in a heating circuit. Tanks with a 10 bar pressure rating are suitable for most residential and commercial installations. If the tank will be used with drinking water, make sure it is rated for that purpose; in heating systems, check the maximum operating temperature. Fitting a valve between the tank and the installation allows you to isolate the tank without draining the system during future maintenance.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a non-burst tank and a standard horizontal tank?
The difference lies in the internal structure: in a non-burst tank the membrane is fixed to the body, whereas standard horizontal expansion vessels typically have a bladder-type membrane.
Can I mount a pump on top of this tank?
This is possible on models that have a pump mounting plate. Check that the plate dimensions and load capacity are compatible with your pump.
How is the air pressure checked?
With the pump off and the system depressurized, a pressure gauge is attached to the valve on the tank to check the pressure.
Are vertical options available?
Yes; if floor space is limited, you can browse vertical non-burst tanks.
Should the feet of the horizontal tank be secured to the floor?
In vibration-prone environments, securing the feet with anchors or rubber pads prevents the tank from shifting and reduces the load on the connections.
Can it be used in a heating installation?
Models specified as suitable for heating systems may be used; check the maximum operating temperature in the product information.
