What is a 12 V or 24 V booster pump?

Booster pumps operating on 12 V or 24 V direct current (DC) are used in caravans, boats, yachts, camper vans, country houses, and off-grid locations to pump water from systems powered by a battery or solar panel. Most of these pumps have a diaphragm construction, are self-priming, and operate automatically when a tap is opened thanks to a built-in pressure switch. This makes it possible to use water from a storage tank with comfort similar to a mains water supply.

What to look for when choosing

Installation and use

Mount the pump close to the water tank and, if possible, near the tank level. Fitting a pre-filter on the suction line protects the diaphragm and valves from dirt. Secure the pump with rubber mounts and use flexible hose to prevent vibration from being transmitted to the vehicle body. In systems that will not be used during winter, drain the pump and lines; frozen water can damage the diaphragm and casing. Using an appropriate fuse in the wiring protects both the pump and the electrical system.

Frequently asked questions

Does a DC booster pump work with a solar panel?

Yes, it can be used comfortably in solar energy systems set up with a suitable charge controller and battery. You can also browse the solar DC pump and booster pump category for more details.

Why does the pump run when the tap is closed?

There may be a leak in the lines, a loose connection, or the tank may have run dry. Check the connections and the water level; the pressure switch setting should also be reviewed.

Is a bilge pump the same as a booster pump?

No. Bilge pumps discharge water that has collected in the bottom of a boat; booster pumps deliver water from a clean water tank to the taps under pressure.

Can I use a 12 V pump in a 24 V system?

No. The wrong voltage will damage the motor; choose the model that matches your system's voltage.
