What Is a Duct Fan?

A duct fan is defined as a fan installed inside or connected to a duct to provide optimal air circulation. A duct-type fan does not mount directly to drywall or a ceiling; instead, it is typically installed in a ceiling void or roof space, connected to the air ducts.

What Are the Advantages of Duct Fans?

  • Powerful airflow and easy installation
  • It provides sustained high pressure, high efficiency, and low noise.
  • Both sides of duct fans can be connected to ducts and secured with clamps. The fans can operate in any mounting position.
  • Self-extinguishing plastic housing (self-extinguishing rating V0).
  • Application option for different diameters, diameter 100 mm
  • Two-speed AC motor with thermal overload protection and shaft on ball bearings.
  • Axial-radial fan.
  • IMQ safety and performance certifications.

Points to Consider When Selecting a Fan

4 parameters should be considered when selecting a fan:
  • Required Air Flow Rate
  • Pressure Losses
  • Acceptable Noise Level
  • Electrical Power Connection Type
The air changes required for the space to be ventilated depend on the intended use of the space, the number of occupants and objects inside, and their activities. The table alongside provides the required air change rate coefficients for different environments.

Environment Air Change Rate

Paint Ovens 25-50
Vault Rooms 3-6
Cinemas and Theaters 5-8
Commercial Kitchens 15-30
Foundries 8-15
Gymnasiums 4-6
Laundries 10-20
Indoor Swimming Pools 3-4
Restaurants 8-12
Conference Rooms 6-8

Dry Cleaning 5-15
General Manufacturing Areas 4-8
Hospitals 8-12
Laboratories 8-15
Normal Activity (non-smoking) 29 m³/h
Normal Activity (smoking) 58 m³/h
Light Activity 45 m³/h
Heavy Activity (industrial work areas) 60 m³/h

The amount of air per person in living and working spaces depending on activity level can help determine the required air flow rate.

Normal Activity (Non-Smoking) 29 m³/h
Normal Activity (Smoking) 58 m³/h
Light Activity 45 m³/h
Heavy Activity 60 m³/h

Based on the information provided above, the required air flow rate is determined as follows.

  • Q [ m³/h ] = Air change rate coefficient (1 hour) × Space volume (m³)
  • Or

  • Q [ m³/h ] = Number of people × Air flow rate required per person
After determining the required air flow rate for the space, an appropriate duct design (taking noise and air velocity criteria into account) should be made and pressure losses calculated. The fan type (axial, radial, roof, smoke extraction, etc.) should be decided based on the operating environment, and the appropriate fan should be selected from the relevant fan curve according to the determined flow rate–static pressure pair. To briefly illustrate the above with an example: an office has 5 employees, a ceiling height of 2.6 meters, and a floor area of 50 m², giving a volume of 2.6 × 50 = 130 m³. The air change rate coefficient given for an office in the table is 4–8; let's take 5. 130 × 5 = 650 m³/h air requirement. If we assume normal activity in the office, 5 people × 29 m³ = 145 m³ for employees, giving a total of 650 + 145 = 795 m³/h air requirement.

Fan selection is also made based on this flow rate requirement.

After completing the flow rate calculations, the installation location of the fan should be determined. Where will the fan be mounted — ceiling, wall, chimney, or ventilation duct? Another consideration is the voltage of the electrical supply to the fan. Continuing with our office example: fans in offices are generally mounted on a wall or glass. If a domestic electricity supply is used, a single-phase fan should be preferred. If it is to be used in an industrial setting, a fan operating on three-phase (380 V) power should be used.
