What Is an Axial Fan?

An axial fan is a type of fan in which air flows in an axial direction parallel to the shaft on which the impellers rotate. The flow is axial at both inlet and outlet. The impellers rotating around an axis draw air parallel to that axis and push it outward in the same direction. The fan is designed to generate force by creating a pressure difference, causing flow through the fan. Axial fans produce high-velocity airflow, which creates large volumes of airflow. However, the airflow they generate is at low pressure. Blower and cooling axial fans, as the name suggests, create a cooling effect by blowing hot air.

Where Are Industrial Axial Fans Used?

  • Axial fans are widely used for ventilation and cooling in industrial, residential, and commercial settings.
  • They are very well suited for applications requiring high airflow rates.
  • Thanks to specially designed blade structures developed with advanced software technology, high airflow rates are achieved at minimum noise levels.
  • Hot air exhaust in general and industrial buildings where air temperature is high,
  • Warehouses, stockrooms, and storage facilities,
  • Garages and public buildings, agricultural buildings,
  • Commercial greenhouses,
  • Large workshops,
  • Paint shops,
  • Factories,
  • Environments containing dust and vapor,
  • Cooling of industrial machinery (welding machines, transformers, compressors)

Fan Housing and Blade Components of Axial Exhaust Fans

  • Housing and blade sections manufactured from cold-drawn, high-quality DKP sheet steel,
  • High corrosion resistance with environmentally friendly electrostatic epoxy powder coating,
  • Impeller blades dynamically tested to ISO 1940 standard,
  • Front and rear protection guards conforming to EN 60335-2-80 standards,
  • Its slim, compact design with motor and impeller takes up 50% less space than comparable units,
  • Low noise level

Motor of Axial Exhaust Fans

  • High-quality production without manual intervention on high-technology CNC machines,
  • Aluminum-finned motor housing with high thermal conductivity,
  • Rotor balanced to ISO 1940 standards for extended bearing service life,
  • Insulation class F for a high operating range of −40° to +70°C for the windings.* 230 V / 50 Hz three-phase fan motor; click for the single-phase model
  • Standards-compliant certified components,
  • IP 54 protection class (IP 55 production option available on request)
  • Variable frequency drive (VFD) control capability for three-phase fans

Points to Consider When Selecting an Axial Exhaust Fan

4 parameters should be considered when selecting a fan:
  • Required Air Flow Rate
  • Pressure Losses
  • Acceptable Noise Level
  • Electrical Power Connection Type
The air change rate required for the space to be ventilated depends on the intended use of the space, the number of people and items inside, and their activity levels. The table alongside shows the recommended air change coefficients for different types of spaces.

Environment Air Change Coefficient
Auditoriums 6-8
Paint Ovens 25-50
Vault Rooms 3-6
Cinemas and Theaters 5-8
Commercial Kitchens 15-30
Foundries 8-15
Gymnasiums 4-6
Laundries 10-20
Indoor Swimming Pools 3-4
Restaurants 8-12
Conference Rooms 6-8
Waiting Rooms 4-6
Copy Rooms 10-15
Machine Rooms 10-40
Shops 4-8
Dry Cleaning 5-15
General Manufacturing Areas 4-8
Hospitals 8-12
Laboratories 8-15
Normal Activity (non-smoking) 29 m³/h
Normal Activity (smoking) 58 m³/h
Light Activity 45 m³/h
Heavy Activity (industrial workspaces) 60 m³/h

Per-person air volumes in living and working spaces based on activity level can help determine the required air flow rate.

Based on the information provided above, the required air flow rate is determined as follows.

  • Q [m³/h] = Air change rate (1 hour) × Room volume (m³)

Or

  • Q [m³/h] = Number of persons × Air flow rate required per person
After calculating the required airflow for the space, appropriate duct design (considering sound and air velocity criteria) must be carried out and pressure losses must be calculated. Depending on the environment in which the fan will operate, the fan type (axial, radial, roof, smoke exhaust, etc.) should be decided and the appropriate fan selected from the fan curve based on the determined flow rate–static pressure pair. To illustrate briefly with an example of the above and the table: an office has 5 employees, a ceiling height of 2.6 m, and a floor area of 50 m²; therefore it has a volume of 2.6 × 50 = 130 m³. The air change coefficient given for offices in the air change rate table was 4–8. Taking an average of 5: 130 × 5 = 650 m³/h air requirement. Assuming normal activity in the office, 5 persons × 29 m³ = 145 m³ air requirement for occupants, giving a total of 650 + 145 = 795 m³/h air requirement.

Fan selection is made according to this flow rate requirement.

After completing the flow rate calculations, the installation location of the fan must be determined. Where will the fan be mounted — on the ceiling, wall, chimney or ventilation duct? Another consideration is the voltage of the electrical supply to the fan. Since we are using an office as our example, let's continue from there. Fans are generally mounted on walls or windows in offices. If domestic electricity is to be used, a single-phase fan should be preferred. If the fan is to be used in an industrial setting, a fan operating on three-phase (380 V) power should be used.
