What Is Resin and What Does It Do?
Water softening is the process of removing calcium and magnesium ions, which cause water hardness, by passing them through a cationic resin. The process begins when the ion-exchange cationic resin becomes saturated with sodium ions. As hard water passes through the resin bed, calcium and magnesium ions attack the resin. The resin absorbs these ions and releases sodium ions in return. The sodium ions released into the water do not cause any hardness.
