How does a reverse osmosis water purifier work?
Reverse osmosis (RO) water purifiers purify water through a multi-stage filtration process for drinking purposes. In the first stages, sediment and carbon filter cartridges remove sand, rust, chlorine, and odor; the water is then forced under pressure through a very fine-pored membrane. The membrane separates a large proportion of the dissolved salts and many other contaminants in the water. The purified water accumulates in a tank and reaches the faucet after passing through a final carbon filter cartridge.
Types of units
- Pump-free units: Operate without an additional pump where mains pressure is sufficient.
- Pumped units: When mains pressure is low, the built-in pump provides the pressure required by the membrane.
- Tank models: Store purified water in a several-gallon tank, keeping it ready for immediate use.
- Cabinet models: Filters and tank are housed in an enclosed cabinet, offering a tidier appearance.
The term "5-stage" in product names indicates the number of filtration stages, while the gallon figure indicates the tank capacity.
Choosing the right unit
If your mains pressure is low, a pumped model should be preferred; insufficient pressure reduces membrane efficiency. Your household's daily drinking and cooking water requirement should be compared against the tank capacity and the unit's daily production output. Reverse osmosis units produce some wastewater during purification; this water is connected to the drain. Since the mineral content of the purified water is reduced, some models include mineral-addition filter cartridges.
Maintenance
The replacement intervals for pre-filters, the membrane, and the post-carbon filter cartridge are specified by the manufacturer and must be followed. Filters that are not replaced shorten membrane life and reduce water quality. In units that have not been used for an extended period, the water in the tank should be drained and refreshed. Hygiene rules must be observed during maintenance.
Frequently asked questions
Pumped or pump-free?
If mains pressure is sufficient, choose a pump-free model; if it is low, choose a pumped model.
Does the unit produce wastewater?
Yes; the membrane sends the separated contaminants to the drain together with a quantity of water.
When should filters be replaced?
Replacement intervals are specified by the manufacturer; they may vary depending on water quality and consumption.
Can it be used with well water?
Well water should first be analyzed; if there is a microbiological risk, additional disinfection is required.
Is installation difficult?
Under-counter installation requires basic plumbing knowledge; if you are unsure, seek help from a plumber.
Where are the replacement filters?
For replacement cartridges, see the water filters category.
