What is a large-diameter well pump?
Hand-dug wells are wide-diameter, generally shallow wells constructed with concrete rings or stone masonry. Large-diameter well pumps are multistage submersible pumps used to meet the water needs of homes, gardens, and small businesses from these wells and large water tanks. They may have a wider casing than borehole pumps and fit comfortably inside the well.
Key features
- Multistage design: Generates high pressure unlike drainage pumps; can supply water directly to household faucets.
- Float switch: Stops the pump when the well water runs low, preventing dry running.
- Hydromat models: Can be used like a booster pump thanks to electronic control that starts when a tap is opened and stops when it is closed.
- Single-phase motor: Models that run on household electricity simplify residential installation.
Selection criteria
Calculate the difference between the water level in the well and the highest point where the water will be used; add pipe losses and the pressure you want at the taps. When planning garden irrigation, determine the flow rate based on how many sprinkler heads will operate simultaneously. If the water in your well contains sand, suspend the pump higher above the bottom and consider using a sand separator filter. In wells where the water level varies greatly by season, set the pump's hanging depth according to the lowest level.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a large-diameter well pump and a borehole pump?
Borehole pumps are designed to fit into narrow borehole casings and can pump water from much greater depths. Large-diameter well pumps are a more practical and economical solution for wide, shallow wells.
Can a hydromat well pump replace a booster pump?
For small-scale use, yes; it starts when a tap is opened and stops when it is closed. For multi-story buildings, a separate booster pump system is more appropriate.
How is the pump lowered into the well?
The pump should be lowered using a stainless steel cable or rope attached to the suspension point on the casing, not by its cable. The hose or pipe connected to the outlet should also be secured without tension.
How many floors can a large-diameter well pump supply?
This depends on the pump's head and the water level in the well. You can roughly estimate the remaining pressure by subtracting the well depth and floor heights from the head value shown on the product page.
What should be done if the pump starts and stops frequently?
In hydromat systems, this is usually caused by a small leak in the plumbing. Check the faucets and tanks; if necessary, add a small expansion vessel to the system.
