How does an electromagnetic submersible pump work?

Electromagnetic (vibrating or vibratory) submersible pumps have no rotating motor or impeller. An electromagnet in the body attracts and releases a diaphragm or piston at mains frequency, causing it to vibrate; this movement draws in water and pushes it toward the outlet. Thanks to its simple design, it is a lightweight, compact, and economical pump. It runs on household electricity (220 V) and is typically used with a 1/2 inch hose connection.

Where are they used?

Despite its low flow rate, it offers good head for its size. For applications requiring a continuous and high volume of water, stepped shallow well or borehole pumps will be more suitable.

Points to note during use

Vibrating pumps are sensitive to sandy and muddy water; hang the pump inside the well above the bottom rather than resting it on it. Dry running damages the diaphragm and coil, so monitor the water level. Carry the pump by its suspension rope, not its cable, and fit a rubber ring to the body to prevent it from hitting the well casing. Using the pump in intervals rather than running it continuously prevents the coil from overheating.

Choosing the right model

The amount of water delivered by electromagnetic pumps decreases noticeably as head increases; refer to the table on the product page for flow rate values at different heads. The height difference between the water level in the well and the point where the water will be used must remain within the range shown in the table. As hose length increases, friction losses also increase, so consider a higher-capacity model when delivering water to distant points.

Frequently asked questions

Does an electromagnetic pump make noise?

Because it operates underwater, the noise is largely dampened; however, vibration can be transmitted through the pipe or hose. Using a flexible hose reduces this effect.

Can these pumps be used with hot water?

No; electromagnetic pumps are for cold, clean water. The maximum permitted water temperature is stated on the product page.

Can the diaphragm be replaced?

On many models, the diaphragm and rubber parts can be renewed. You can contact us with the model information for spare part needs.

At what depth should the pump be hung in the well?

The pump must be fully submerged and must not touch the bottom of the well. Set the hanging depth based on the lowest water level to ensure the pump does not become exposed as the water level drops.
