What is a self-valved pump?
Self-valved pumps are centrifugal pumps with a built-in valve (non-return flap) on the suction side of the casing. When the pump stops, the valve closes and the water in the casing cannot flow back. This means that after the pump is primed and started for the first time, it can self-prime on subsequent starts without needing to be refilled. This feature provides great convenience in irrigation and transfer operations that involve frequent starting and stopping.
Applications
- Irrigation of fields and gardens by drawing water from irrigation channels, ponds, and pools
- Filling or emptying tankers and tanks
- Water transfer on construction sites
- Irrigation in greenhouses and nurseries
The valved design also offers practical advantages when a foot valve cannot be used at the end of the suction pipe or when the foot valve frequently becomes clogged.
Selection and use
The pump's flow rate and head should be selected according to the requirements of your irrigation system. As suction lift increases, the time for the pump to start drawing water becomes longer; therefore, install the pump as close to the water level as possible. The suction pipe must be airtight; even the smallest air leak makes priming more difficult. Before the first start-up, do not forget to fill the casing completely with water through the priming plug.
Maintenance
Sand and sediment accumulated on the valve seating surface can prevent the valve from closing fully. If the water in the casing drains every time the pump stops, check and clean the valve. During periods of freezing risk, the water in the casing must be drained.
Frequently asked questions
Do a valve pump and a foot valve do the same job?
They serve a similar function; a foot valve is at the end of the suction pipe, whereas in a self-valved pump the valve is in the pump casing.
Why does the pump not deliver water on the first start?
The casing not being completely full or an air leak in the suction line are the most common causes.
Can it pump dirty water?
These pumps are for clean or lightly soiled water; dirty water pumps should be preferred for liquids containing solid particles.
What power supply does it operate on?
Depending on the model, it is available as 220 V single-phase or 380 V three-phase.
Can a valve pump be used with a hose?
Yes; a spiral hose that does not collapse under vacuum should be used on the suction side, and a pressure-resistant hose should be used on the discharge side.
What changes as suction lift increases?
It takes the pump longer to draw water and the flow rate decreases. Installing the pump as close to the water level as possible therefore both shortens the priming time and improves efficiency.
