What is a tractor pump?
Tractor pumps are irrigation and transfer pumps driven by the tractor's power take-off (PTO). They attach to the rear of the tractor and can be easily transported from field to field, enabling irrigation in places without electrical infrastructure. Their main applications include feeding sprinkler systems, drawing water from channels for flood irrigation, and filling and emptying water tankers.
Model types
- PTO-driven pumps: Portable irrigation pumps connected to and driven by a tractor.
- Sprinkler pumps: Generate high pressure to feed sprinkler heads.
- Tanker pumps: For filling and emptying trailer tankers.
- Hydraulic motor pumps: Models driven by the tractor's hydraulic system.
The flow rate (m³/h) and pressure (m) values in product names give an indication of the pump's irrigation capacity.
Selection and installation
The speed and power required by the pump must be compatible with the tractor's power take-off (PTO) output. The length and profile of the PTO shaft are selected according to the distance between the tractor and the pump. The pump's connection ports must be compatible with the hoses and pipes to be used. The pump should be positioned on a level surface and the shaft angle kept as small as possible; large angles accelerate wear on the shaft and joints.
Maintenance and safety
The pump must never be operated without the shaft guard in place. Regular lubrication of the bearings and joints ensures uninterrupted operation throughout the season. Before winter, all water inside the pump must be completely drained.
Frequently asked questions
Is it compatible with every tractor?
It can be used with most tractors as long as the PTO shaft profile and speed are suitable; check the product specifications.
Can a tractor pump feed a drip irrigation system?
It can be used with the appropriate pressure and filtration; however, drip systems generally work more efficiently with fixed electric pumps.
What is the advantage of a hydraulic motor-driven pump?
It does not require a PTO shaft; the pump can be positioned farther from the tractor.
How much water does the pump deliver?
The flow rate depends on the model and PTO speed; refer to the product specifications.
Where are similar pumps?
For beet engine-type models, see the beet engine pumps category.
How is the flow rate adjusted on a tractor pump?
The flow rate is adjusted via the PTO speed and the valve on the discharge line. Reducing the speed both lowers fuel consumption and allows the pump to operate at a lower pressure.
What should be fitted to the pump's suction inlet?
When drawing water from a canal or pond, a strainer basket should be fitted to the end of the suction hose to prevent weeds, stones, and mud from entering the pump.
