What is a peripheral pump?
Peripheral pumps use a disc-shaped impeller with many small vanes around its circumference. Water is repeatedly accelerated around the perimeter of the impeller and thus pressurized. Thanks to this design, peripheral pumps can generate high pressure at low flow despite their small size. They are an economical solution for boosting household water pressure, building small booster pump systems, supplying garden faucets, and transferring water from tanks.
Advantages and things to watch out for
- Compact and economical: Its small body fits in tight spaces, and the initial investment cost is low.
- High pressure: Can deliver small amounts of water to elevated points.
- Requires clean water: Because the clearance between the impeller and casing is very narrow, sand and sediment quickly wear the impeller or jam the pump.
- Limited flow rate: May be insufficient where many faucets are used simultaneously.
For these reasons, peripheral pumps should only be used with clean mains or tank water, and a strainer should be fitted on the suction line.
Selection and installation
When selecting a pump, evaluate the maximum head and flow rate values on the product page together; the flow rate of peripheral pumps drops rapidly as pressure increases. A foot valve must be used on the suction line, and the pump casing must be filled with water before the first start-up. To prevent the impeller from sticking to the casing when the pump is left idle for a long time, it is recommended to run it occasionally. For applications requiring higher flow, jet pumps or centrifugal pumps are more suitable.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a peripheral pump fail to turn after a long period of inactivity?
Limescale and sediment can bond the impeller to the casing. Disconnecting the power and manually turning the shaft a few times with a screwdriver usually frees the pump; if the problem persists, seek service support.
Can a peripheral pump be used with hot water?
Standard models are for cold water. Models designed for hot water can be found in the hot water pumps category.
What is needed to build a booster pump?
Adding a pressure switch, a small expansion vessel, a pressure gauge, and a five-way fitting — or a pressure controller — to the pump is sufficient.
How many faucets can it supply?
Due to its limited flow rate, it is generally suitable for one or two simultaneous points of use.
Is a peripheral pump sufficient for garden irrigation?
It may be sufficient for a single hose or a few drip lines. If many sprinkler heads will operate at the same time, choose a centrifugal pump with a higher flow rate.
