What is a hot water pump?
Hot water pumps are pumps whose mechanical seals, gaskets and casing materials are manufactured to withstand high temperatures, enabling safe transfer of hot water. The gaskets used in standard water pumps can deteriorate rapidly in hot water; therefore a pump specifically rated for hot water applications must always be selected. The category includes centrifugal, two-stage centrifugal, peripheral and stainless steel casing options.
Applications
- Hot water transfer in heating systems and boiler rooms
- Process water and wash lines in industrial facilities
- Transfer between tanks in solar energy and hot water cylinder systems
- Hot water circulation in food and textile facilities
For circulating water in closed-loop heating systems, circulation pumps are generally used.
Selection considerations
The maximum permissible water temperature for each model is stated in the product name or description; the operating temperature must remain below this value. As water temperature rises, so does its tendency to vaporize, increasing the risk of cavitation on the suction side. For this reason, hot water pumps should be installed as far below tank level as possible so that water flows to the pump by gravity, and the suction line should be kept short. Pipes and valves around the pump must also be rated for the same temperature.
Maintenance and safety
Do not disassemble the pump while working on hot water lines without allowing the system to cool down first. Mechanical seal leaks can develop rapidly in high-temperature applications and should be detected early. Adequate airflow around the pump must be ensured so the motor can cool.
Frequently asked questions
Can a standard water pump be used with hot water?
This is not recommended. The gaskets and mechanical seals of standard pumps may not be suitable for hot water; leaks and failures can occur in a short time.
Will a hot water pump work with cold water?
Yes; pumps rated for hot water can also be used with cold water.
When should a stainless steel model be preferred?
A stainless steel casing provides a longer service life in hot water applications that require hygiene, involve a risk of corrosion, or contain chemical additives.
How can cavitation be identified?
A sound resembling gravel in the pump and fluctuating pressure are typical signs of cavitation; suction conditions need to be improved.
Is motor protection required for a hot water pump?
Yes; a control panel with appropriate thermal overload protection settings for a motor operating in a hot environment will protect the motor against overcurrent and phase problems.
