What is an engine-driven pump?
An engine-driven pump is a portable water pump in which a centrifugal pump is combined with a petrol or diesel internal combustion engine. It is used for irrigating fields, vineyards, and gardens where there is no electrical supply, for draining flooded areas, dewatering construction excavations, supporting firefighting, and filling tankers. Thanks to its carrying frame, it can easily be moved from one place to another.
Types of engine-driven pump
- Petrol engine pumps: An economical solution that is lightweight, easy to start, and suited to short-duration tasks.
- Diesel engine pumps: Lower fuel consumption for long-duration, heavy-duty irrigation.
- High-pressure (high-head) models: For delivering water to elevated points or over long distances.
- Self-priming models: Prime themselves after the initial fill.
The outlet diameter (such as 1.5, 2, or 3 inch) gives an indication of the pump's flow rate; a larger diameter generally means a higher flow rate.
Selection recommendations
Consider how long and how often it will be used: a petrol engine-driven pump is more advantageous for occasional use, while a diesel engine-driven pump is better for long operating hours. Flow rate and head must be selected according to the irrigation method and the distance over which water is to be transported. Electric-start models offer easy starting, while pull-start models are simpler and lighter. Weight is an important criterion if the pump will be moved frequently.
Use and maintenance
Before starting, fill the pump casing with water and check the engine oil level. For new engines, follow the break-in period recommended by the manufacturer. Engine-driven pumps must not be operated indoors; exhaust gas is toxic. After use, drain the water from the pump; if it is to be stored for an extended period, drain the fuel tank or use a fuel stabilizer.
Frequently asked questions
Can an engine-driven pump be used with dirty water?
Standard models are for clean and lightly soiled water; dirty water engine-driven pumps should be preferred for muddy water.
Should I choose petrol or diesel?
Petrol models are more suitable for short and infrequent tasks; diesel models are better for long-duration intensive use.
How deep can an engine-driven pump draw water from?
As a surface pump, the suction lift generally does not exceed 7–8 meters.
How often should maintenance be carried out?
Oil changes and air filter cleaning should be performed at the operating hours specified in the engine manual.
What do you recommend where electricity is available?
Where electricity is available, electric centrifugal pumps are quieter and more economical.
