What is a drum pump?
Drum pumps are pumps that are inserted through the opening of a drum or container to transfer the liquid inside to another vessel. They provide speed and cleanliness when distributing oil, diesel, antifreeze, detergent, and similar liquids from drums into smaller containers. Workshops, auto-repair shops, agricultural operations, factories, and warehouses are the primary users of these pumps.
Drum pump types
- Manual lever drum pumps: No electricity required; an economical solution for occasional transfers.
- Electric drum pumps: Operates on 220 V; for frequent and fast transfers.
- Stainless steel casing models: For liquids with corrosion risk and applications requiring hygiene.
- Grease pumps: Mechanical hand pumps used to inject grease into machinery.
The dip tube length of the drum pump must be suitable for the height of the drum being used.
Selection recommendations
The type of liquid to be transferred determines pump selection: a pump suitable for oil and diesel may not be suitable for acids or solvents. As liquid viscosity increases, flow rate decreases; for thick oils, electric pumps save time. The drum opening size and the pump's connection adapter must be compatible. In high-use facilities, models with a flow meter or dispensing nozzle make it easier to control fill quantities.
Safe use
Only pumps documented as suitable for flammable liquid transfer must be used when handling flammable liquids. When using electric pumps on wet surfaces, use a socket with residual current protection. If switching between different liquids, clean the pump beforehand to prevent mixing.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a manual drum pump take to empty a drum?
The time depends on the liquid viscosity and the capacity of the lever pump; electric models are more practical for frequent transfers.
Can an electric drum pump be used with diesel?
Models designed for diesel and oil can be used; they must not be used for petrol.
How is a grease pump used?
Fill with a grease cartridge or bulk grease, attach the tip to the grease nipple, and apply pressure using the lever.
What liquids is a stainless steel drum pump suitable for?
A stainless steel casing is preferred for water-based, mildly corrosive, or hygiene-sensitive liquids.
Are higher flow rate options available?
You can check diesel and oil transfer pumps for transferring fuel from a tank to a vehicle.
What opening size does a drum pump fit?
Most models come with an adapter suitable for standard drum openings; compare your drum's opening size with the product specifications.
