What is AdBlue and why does it require a dedicated pump?

AdBlue is a high-purity urea solution used in the exhaust systems of diesel vehicles to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. It is regularly replenished in trucks, buses, tractors and construction machinery. Because AdBlue reacts with certain metals and its purity must be maintained, only pumps whose wetted parts are made from compatible materials should be used for transfer.

Material compatibility

AdBlue is not compatible with copper, brass, zinc or galvanized parts. These materials corrode and can contaminate the solution, damaging the vehicle's system. Stainless steel, polyethylene and polypropylene are suitable for use with AdBlue. In addition to the pump itself, hoses, nozzles, unions and tank materials must also be compatible. Check the product description to confirm AdBlue compatibility.

Pump selection

Thanks to their dry-start tolerance, diaphragm pumps offer convenience when transferring from IBC tanks and drums.

Use and storage

AdBlue must be protected from dust and dirt; transfer equipment should not be used for other liquids, and caps should be replaced after use. The solution can freeze at low temperatures and may degrade if stored at high temperatures for extended periods; therefore the storage tank should be kept in a shaded location at a suitable temperature. AdBlue that has thawed after freezing is generally still usable, but the pump must not be operated while the fluid is frozen.

Frequently asked questions

Can a diesel pump be used for AdBlue?

Not if its materials are incompatible with AdBlue; certain metal parts in diesel pumps can react with the solution.

Can I use the same pump for both diesel and AdBlue?

This is not recommended; contamination of AdBlue with fuel or any other liquid can damage the vehicle's system.

Can a diaphragm pump run dry?

It can withstand brief dry running; even so, do not run it dry for extended periods.

What hose should be used?

Use plastic or rubber hoses and compatible unions that are specified as suitable for AdBlue.

Where are the other transfer pumps?

For diesel and oil, browse the diesel and oil transfer pumps category.

Can an AdBlue pump be used to transfer water?

While technically possible, the pump should be dedicated to AdBlue only, eliminating any risk of contaminating the solution.
