What is a cutting fluid pump?
Cutting fluid pumps are pumps used in machine tools to circulate the coolant that cools the cutting tool and workpiece and removes chips. Lathes, milling machines, CNC machining centers, grinding machines, and saw machines are the main application areas. The pump's suction section is immersed in the machine tool's coolant tank, while the motor remains above the tank. This design is called an immersion-type pump.
Selection criteria
- Immersion depth: The length of the portion of the pump that goes inside the tank must match the tank depth.
- Flow rate and pressure: Determined by the number of coolant nozzles on the machine and the desired pressure.
- Power supply: Pumps in this class are typically available as 380 V three-phase.
- Material: Stainless steel models offer greater corrosion resistance.
- Explosion-proof models: Options with explosion-protected motors for environments where flammable vapors may be present.
When replacing an existing pump, the flange dimensions and mounting hole spacing should also be compared.
Use and maintenance
Chips and sediment in the coolant wear down the pump's impeller and cause blockages. Using a chip-catching strainer in the tank and cleaning the tank regularly extends pump life. If the fluid level drops below the pump's suction level, the pump will draw in air and efficiency will decrease. The motor's cooling fan must not become contaminated with chips and oil vapors.
Replacement tips
When replacing a faulty cutting fluid pump, note the power, speed, voltage, and immersion depth from the old pump's nameplate. Selecting a model that matches the flow rate and pressure values recommended by the machine manufacturer prevents insufficient cooling.
Frequently asked questions
Do cutting fluid pumps run on single-phase power?
Most models in the category are three-phase; check the product information for single-phase requirements.
Why is the pump foaming?
A low fluid level or the return line agitating the fluid can cause foaming.
When is a stainless steel model needed?
A stainless steel casing is preferred for corrosive coolants and applications where a long service life is expected.
Where are explosion-proof pumps used?
They are used in environments where flammable oil vapors or gases may be present, in compliance with applicable explosion protection requirements.
Are there similar pumps?
You can check out stainless steel pumps for chemical fluids.
What happens if the fluid level in the tank drops?
Immersion-type pumps are cooled and lubricated by the fluid; if the fluid level remains low, the pump overheats and the mechanical seal may be damaged.
