Why is pool heating necessary?
Keeping pool water at a comfortable temperature extends the swimming season and allows the pool to be used in spring and autumn as well. For indoor pools, the water must be maintained at a constant temperature year-round. Pool heating systems connect to the filtration line, heat the water returning from the pool, and send it back.
Heating methods
- Electric pool heaters: Heat the water directly with electrical energy; easy to install.
- Heat pumps: Work by transferring heat from the air to the water; an efficient method under suitable conditions.
- Heat exchangers: Transfer heat from a boiler or solar energy system to the pool water.
The operating principle, capacity, and electrical requirements of the products in this category are stated in the product descriptions; high-power electric heaters generally require a three-phase supply.
How is heating capacity calculated?
The required heating capacity depends on the pool volume, the desired temperature rise, how quickly that rise needs to be achieved, and the pool's heat losses. In outdoor pools, wind, nighttime temperatures, and evaporation increase heat loss. Using a pool cover significantly reduces evaporation-related heat loss, especially at night, and lowers heating costs. A heat loss calculation is recommended for a definitive selection.
Installation and safety
The heating system should be connected to the filtration line after the filter and before the chlorination point; high-concentration chemicals passing through the heater can cause corrosion. Electrical connections must be made by a qualified electrician using cable of the appropriate cross-section, fuses, and residual current protection. The heater must have a flow sensor or appropriate control wiring to prevent it from activating when the filtration pump is not running.
Frequently asked questions
What temperature should I heat the pool water to?
It depends on personal comfort preference; every degree of increase raises energy consumption.
Does a pool cover really make a difference?
Yes; it reduces evaporation and heat loss, lowering heating costs.
What power supply does the heater require?
The electrical requirements are stated in the product details; a three-phase line may be required for high-power units.
Heat pump or electric heater?
Heat pumps are more efficient under suitable weather conditions; electric heaters are a fast and compact solution.
Is the heater affected by chemicals?
Correct water chemistry and the correct connection sequence protect the heater's service life.
What other pool equipment is needed alongside heating?
For filtration, disinfection, and cleaning, see the products in the pool equipment category.
