How does a pool vacuum work?

A manual pool vacuum consists of a vacuum head attached to the end of a telescopic pole and a hose that connects the head to the skimmer or vacuum port. While the filtration pump is running, the head is moved across the pool floor; the pump's suction carries sediment and dirt from the floor through the hose to the filter. It is the primary cleaning method in pools without a robot, or for corners a robot cannot reach.

Category contents

The connection type of the vacuum head to the pole and the hose diameter must be compatible with your existing equipment.

How is vacuuming done?

The hose should be completely filled with water to purge the air before being connected to the skimmer; an air-filled hose disrupts the pump's suction. The vacuum head should be moved slowly across the floor in overlapping strokes; fast movements stir the sediment back into the water. For heavy sediment or cleaning after flocculant treatment, vacuuming with the filter valve set to the waste position (if the valve allows) prevents the filter from clogging. After cleaning, the pump basket and filter pressure should be checked.

Maintenance

The hose should not be left in the sun after use and should be stored without kinking; sunlight gradually hardens the plastic. The wheels and brushes of the vacuum head should be checked regularly, and worn parts replaced. At the end of the season, equipment should be rinsed with clean water, dried, and stored.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the pump drawing air during vacuuming?

Air may remain inside the hose; fill the hose completely with water and reconnect it.

How do I choose hose length?

It should be long enough to reach from the skimmer to the farthest point of the pool.

Is manual vacuuming necessary when there is a robot?

It is useful for corners and steps the robot cannot reach.

Does the vacuum head fit every pole?

If the connection type is not standard, compatibility should be checked.

Should the filter be cleaned after vacuuming?

If filter pressure has increased, backwashing should be performed.

What do you recommend for automatic cleaning?

For automatic cleaning, see pool cleaning robots.

Is the telescopic pole purchased separately?

The vacuum head and hose are used with a compatible telescopic pole; whether the pole is included is stated in the product description.

Is a wall brush needed?

Using a wall brush for dirt that accumulates on pool walls and the waterline, together with the vacuum, provides more thorough cleaning.
