What does a petrol generator do?

Petrol generators are portable power sources used to provide backup power at home during outages, to run appliances on camping and caravan trips, and to power electric tools on construction sites and in the garden. They are lighter than diesel generators and generally quieter, offering a practical solution for short to medium-duration use.

Generator types

Power values in product information may be given in kVA or W; use the same unit when making comparisons.

How is power calculated?

Add up the power ratings of all devices to be run simultaneously. Motor-driven devices such as refrigerators, pumps, and compressors can draw several times their rated current at start-up; the generator's peak power must therefore meet this start-up demand. Leaving some margin above the calculated value prevents the generator from being run continuously at full load.

Safe use

A generator must never be operated indoors, inside a garage, or in front of windows and doors under any circumstances; the carbon monoxide in the exhaust is poisonous and odorless. Connecting a generator to a building's electrical installation requires a proper transfer (changeover) arrangement; this connection must be made by a qualified electrician. Refueling should be done only after the engine has been stopped and cooled down, and fuel should be stored in appropriate containers in a safe location.

Frequently asked questions

Why choose an inverter generator?

Because it produces clean electricity, it is safer for sensitive electronic devices.

Can a generator be connected directly to the house?

It must not be connected without a proper transfer arrangement; the work must be carried out by an electrician.

How many hours does a petrol generator run?

It depends on the tank capacity and load; refer to the run time stated in the product information.

What is the difference between kVA and kW?

kVA represents apparent power and kW represents usable power; in generators the kW value is generally lower than the kVA value.

How is a generator serviced?

Oil changes and air filter and spark plug checks should be performed at the intervals specified in the manual.

What do you recommend for extended use?

Diesel generators may be more economical for extended operation.
