What is a hot water cylinder and how does it work?

A hot water cylinder is an insulated tank that heats domestic water and stores it hot. Through the coil (heat exchanger tube) inside, hot water from a combi boiler, boiler, or solar collectors indirectly heats the domestic water in the tank. This provides an abundant and consistent hot water supply in homes, hotels, gyms, and businesses where multiple bathrooms are used simultaneously.

Single-coil or twin-coil?

Models in this category range from 100 to 1,000 liters.

Capacity selection

The cylinder capacity is determined by the number of users, the number of showers used simultaneously, and hot water consumption habits. 100–160 liters is preferred for small families, while larger capacities are chosen for larger households and businesses. For systems that will run on solar energy, the capacity may be selected somewhat larger to account for overcast days. The capacity of the heat source directly affects how quickly the cylinder heats up.

Installation and safety

A safety valve of the appropriate pressure rating must be installed on the cold water inlet of the hot water cylinder, and a suitable expansion vessel must be added to the system to accommodate the expansion of the heated water. Using a thermostatic mixing valve on the hot water outlet reduces the risk of scalding. The magnesium anode found in enamel-coated tanks is a consumable part that protects the tank from corrosion and should be inspected at regular intervals.

Frequently asked questions

How is a hot water cylinder connected to a combi boiler?

The combi boiler must be compatible with cylinder connection; the connection and settings should be carried out by a plumber in accordance with the boiler manual.

What does "rapid cylinder" mean?

It refers to cylinders designed to heat water in a shorter time by using a larger coil surface area.

Is there a Legionella risk in hot water cylinders?

The risk of bacterial growth increases in water that has been standing at low temperatures for extended periods; follow the periodic high-temperature treatments recommended by the manufacturer.

Are hot water cylinders installed vertically?

The installation orientation of models in this category is stated in the product description; most are upright models.

Which model for solar energy?

Twin-coil models should be preferred for use together with a solar collector and a combi boiler.
