How does a tank float valve work?
A tank float valve is a mechanical valve that enables water tanks fed from the mains or a booster pump line to fill automatically. A floating ball (float switch) attached to the valve arm rises with the water level. When the tank fills to the set level, the arm closes the valve and cuts off the water supply; when water is used and the level drops, the float descends and the valve opens again. It operates without electricity.
Where are they used?
- In rooftop and basement water tanks
- In intermediate tanks feeding booster pump systems
- In animal drinkers and irrigation tanks
- In cooling towers and process tanks
- In rainwater and mains-supplemented tanks
For applications requiring electrical level control, water level float switches are preferred.
Selection and installation
The connection size of the float valve must match the tank inlet line; the model in this category has a 1/2 inch connection. Sufficient space must be left inside the tank for the float ball and arm to move freely. The level at which the valve closes is set by adjusting the angle of the arm or repositioning the ball; a level below the tank overflow outlet should be selected. Installing a ball valve at the inlet makes it easier to shut off the water during float valve maintenance.
Maintenance and troubleshooting
If the float valve does not shut off the water completely, the valve gasket may be worn or dirt may have entered the seat; gasket replacement or cleaning will be required. If water enters the float ball, it will prevent the ball from floating and cause the tank to overflow. Some noise when the valve closes on high-pressure lines is normal; if water hammer is excessive, a pressure reducer can be installed on the line.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the tank overflowing?
The float valve gasket may be worn, the ball may have taken on water, or the level may have been set incorrectly.
How is the level adjusted?
The shut-off level is adjusted by changing the bending angle of the arm or the position of the ball on the arm.
Can it be used at high pressure?
The pressure rating of the product should be checked; reducing the pressure first is recommended for very high-pressure lines.
What is the advantage of a brass float valve?
It is corrosion-resistant and long-lasting.
Can electrical control be used instead of a float valve?
Yes; electrical control can be implemented using a level float switch and a solenoid valve.
Can the gasket be replaced?
The gasket can be replaced on many models; select the appropriate spare part based on the model information.
When should the float ball be replaced?
The ball should be replaced if it is cracked, has taken on water, or if the arm connection has come loose. A ball that has taken on water cannot float, so the valve will not close and the tank will overflow.
