What does PTFE tape do?
PTFE tape (Teflon tape) is a thin tape that seals threaded pipe connections by filling the gaps between threads. It is the most commonly used sealing material for threaded fittings such as fittings, valves, pumps, pressure gauges, and pressure switches in plumbing. Its chemically resistant structure and smooth surface also make it easier to tighten parts.
Correct wrapping method
- The threads must be clean, dry, and free of burrs.
- The tape should be wrapped in the tightening direction (usually clockwise) when looking at the end of the male-threaded part.
- Wrapping should start from the first thread; the pipe end must not be covered with tape.
- The tape should be wrapped with slight tension so that it seats into the threads.
- The number of turns should be adjusted according to the thread diameter and tape thickness; too much tape can cause the part to crack.
Tape wrapped in the wrong direction will unwind as the part is tightened and will not provide a seal.
Selection and packaging
The tapes in this category are 12 mm wide and 10 m long. Packs of 10 and 250 are available for plumbers and bulk use, and single options are available for individual needs. Only sealing materials approved for the specific application should be used on natural gas and fuel lines; do not use plumbing tape on these lines.
Tips
Loosening a part back after tightening it in order to bring the connection to the desired orientation can cause a leak; in this case the tape must be replaced. For large-diameter connections, the tape width and number of turns should be adjusted accordingly. Excessive tape on plastic-threaded parts can damage the body.
Frequently asked questions
How many turns of PTFE tape are needed?
It depends on the thread diameter and tape thickness; the amount that allows the part to be started by hand and then tightened comfortably with a wrench is sufficient.
Which direction should it be wrapped?
It is wrapped in the tightening direction when looking at the end of the male-threaded part.
Can it be used with hot water?
PTFE tape is widely used in hot water plumbing systems.
Can it be used together with liquid sealant?
Usually one is sufficient; follow the manufacturer's recommended method.
Is tape needed for union connections?
Tape is not used on union sealing surfaces; it is used only on threaded connections.
Who are the bulk packs suitable for?
They are an economical option for plumbers who make connections frequently and for hardware distributors.
Does PTFE tape go bad?
PTFE tape stored under proper conditions can be used for a long time. Do not wrap dirty or dusty tape onto threads; it will negatively affect the seal.
