What is a magnetic welding square?
A magnetic welding square is an auxiliary tool with a powerful magnetic body that holds metal parts together at specific angles. It eliminates the need for the welder to hold a part with one hand, making tacking and welding easier by fixing profiles, pipes, and sheet metal at the correct angle. It is widely used in workshops, metal fabrication and assembly work, and plumbing and structural applications.
Model types
- Multi-angle squares: Allow clamping at multiple angles thanks to different edges on the body.
- On/off switch squares: The magnet's hold is switched on and off; placing and removing parts becomes easier.
- Spirit level squares: Help check the horizontal and vertical alignment of parts.
- Multi-piece sets: Sets of 2 and 4 units for securing multiple joints at the same time.
The load capacity stated in the product names (e.g., 25 kg) gives an indication of the approximate load the square can hold.
Selection and use
A square of the appropriate capacity for the weight and size of the parts to be held must be selected. Switched models save time in operations involving frequent assembly and disassembly. Square surfaces must be kept clean; swarf and weld spatter reduce holding force and distort the angle. During welding, the magnet must not be held too close to the weld arc; excessive heat can gradually reduce the magnet's strength.
Safety
Strong magnets can pinch fingers; take care when positioning parts. Those using medical devices such as pacemakers should consult their doctor before working with magnetic equipment. Keep electronic devices and magnetic cards away from the square.
Frequently asked questions
Does a magnetic square work on stainless steel?
On non-magnetic grades of stainless steel, holding is weak or non-existent.
What is the advantage of a switched model?
The magnet can be turned off to remove and reposition the square easily.
How many squares are needed?
It depends on the number of joints to be made; using more than one square on frame work speeds up the job.
Is the square affected by heat?
Excessive temperature can reduce magnet strength; do not use too close to the weld point.
What does load capacity mean?
It indicates the approximate load the square can safely hold on a suitable surface.
What is the spirit level for?
It helps verify that parts are properly aligned.
How should I store the square?
Store the square in a dry place away from swarf and metal dust. On switched models, turning the magnet to the off position during storage prevents it from collecting swarf.
