Polyethylene pipe for irrigation lines
Polyethylene (PE) pipes are the most widely preferred pipes for agricultural and garden irrigation lines thanks to their light weight, flexibility, corrosion resistance, and ease of installation. They are used for running a main line from a pump to a field, feeding drip and sprinkler systems, and making well and tank connections. The category includes flexible PE32 and rigid PE100 pipes.
The difference between PE32 and PE100
- PE32 (flexible, low-density polyethylene): Its flexible structure makes it easy to lay and bend; used in lower pressure classes. Practical for garden and small irrigation lines.
- PE100 (rigid, high-density polyethylene): Offers higher pressure resistance; preferred for long main lines and high-pressure systems.
The 6-bar and 10-bar values in product names indicate the pipe's pressure rating; values such as 32 mm indicate its outer diameter.
Pipe selection
The pipe's pressure rating must exceed the maximum pressure the pump can produce. Pipe diameter is selected according to the required flow rate and line length; a narrow pipe causes significant pressure loss over long runs and results in insufficient water pressure at end points. UV-resistant black PE pipes should be preferred for lines exposed to sunlight. Pipes to be buried underground should be laid in a bed free of stones and sharp objects.
Connection and installation
PE pipes can be joined without tools using compression coupling fittings. Pipes supplied in coils are easier to unroll if left in the sun for a while before installation. Fitting drain valves at the lowest points of the line makes it easier to empty the pipes in winter.
Frequently asked questions
Which pipe for drip irrigation?
PE pipe is used for the main line, and drip emitter tubing for the lateral lines; the main line diameter is determined by the size of the area.
Is PE pipe frost-resistant?
Its flexible structure makes it less susceptible to frost damage than metal pipes; it is still recommended to drain the water from the pipes in winter.
How many fittings does a 200-meter coil require?
It depends on the route of the line; determine the need for elbows, tees, and adapters according to the installation plan.
Why is PE100 more expensive?
Its higher-density material and pressure resistance result in a higher cost.
Does pipe selection matter when choosing a pump?
Yes; pipe diameter and length directly affect the head calculation.
