What is a coupling fitting?
A coupling is a compression (push-fit) fitting used to join polyethylene (PE) pipes without welding or special tools. The pipe end is pushed into the body, which contains a union nut and a sealing ring; when the nut is tightened, the pipe is gripped firmly and a leak-free connection is formed. Main applications include agricultural irrigation lines, garden irrigation, well and tank connections, site water lines, and temporary installations.
Category contents
- Coupling sleeve: Joins two PE pipes of the same diameter in a straight run.
- Coupling elbow and reducing elbow: Changes the direction of the line and, where required, provides a diameter transition.
- Coupling tee: Branches a side outlet from the line; models with a threaded outlet allow a valve or tap to be connected.
- Female and male adapters: Connect a PE pipe to threaded plumbing components.
Values such as 20, 25, and 32 in product names indicate the outer diameter of the PE pipe the fitting is compatible with, in millimeters.
How is installation carried out?
The pipe must be cut squarely and cleanly, with all burrs removed. Loosen the union nut, push the pipe into the body up to the stop, and tighten the nut by hand, then with a suitable wrench if necessary. Failure to push the pipe all the way in is the most common cause of leaks and pull-out. After assembly, the line should be pressurized and checked.
Selection recommendations
The diameter of the coupling fitting must exactly match the outer diameter of the PE pipe being used. The pressure rating must meet the maximum working pressure in the line. For lines exposed to sunlight, UV-resistant parts should be preferred. For compatible pipes, browse the irrigation equipment category.
Frequently asked questions
Can a coupling be disassembled and reused?
The pipe can be removed by loosening the nut; if the ring and gasket are in good condition, the fitting can be reused.
What pipes are couplings compatible with?
They are compatible with PE (polyethylene) pipes; pipes made of other materials require a suitable adapter.
Why does the connection leak?
The pipe may not have been pushed all the way in, the pipe end may have been cut at an angle, or the gasket may have shifted out of place.
Can it be used with hot water?
Coupling fittings are generally intended for cold water lines; check the temperature limit in the product information.
What does a threaded adapter do?
It connects a PE pipe to threaded connections such as valves, pumps, or taps.
Are tools required to disassemble coupling fittings?
In most cases they can be disassembled by loosening the nut by hand or with a suitable wrench; no special tools are required.
