What is an electric vehicle charging cable?
Electric vehicle charging cables are high-current-rated specialty cables that provide the connection between a socketless (untethered) charging station and the vehicle. The connectors at both ends of the cable must match the socket types of the station and the vehicle. The model in this category has a Type 2 connector and is rated to support AC charging up to 22 kW.
Selection criteria
- Connector type: Must be compatible with your vehicle's and charging station's socket type; Type 2 is the common standard for AC charging in Türkiye and Europe.
- Current and power capacity: The cable must be able to carry the maximum current the station can deliver; a cable with insufficient capacity limits the charging power.
- Number of phases: For high-power three-phase charging, the cable must be suitable for three-phase use.
- Length: The cable length should be selected based on the distance between the vehicle's parking position and the station; an excessively long cable is cumbersome to use.
Usage recommendations
Do not leave the cable under tension during charging and prevent it from being run over by vehicle wheels. After use, close the connector caps to prevent dust, water, and foreign matter from entering. Store the cable loosely coiled rather than tightly wound. If discoloration or burn marks are found on the connector pins or damage is found on the cable jacket, the cable must not be used.
Safety
Making a splice in the charging cable, using an extension cord, or daisy-chaining adapters creates a safety hazard. The cable must not be handled with wet hands, and connectors must not be left in puddles of water. If unusual heat is noticed during charging, stop charging immediately.
Frequently asked questions
Can this cable be plugged into a home outlet?
No; this cable is used between a charging station and the vehicle. The vehicle's own portable charging unit is required for charging from a home outlet.
Can a 22 kW cable be used at lower power levels?
Yes; the cable can be used at power levels below its rated capacity.
Does cable length affect charging?
For cables of the appropriate cross-section, length has no significant effect on charging power; however, it is important for ease of use.
Does Type 2 fit every vehicle?
The majority of vehicles sold in Europe use a Type 2 AC socket; check your vehicle's socket.
How should the cable be stored?
Store it in a dry place, free from crushing, with connector caps closed.
Are charging stations also available?
Yes; see the electric vehicle charging stations category.
