What does a pressure booster pump do?
Pressure booster pumps are small, low-noise pumps connected directly in line on the plumbing. They are used to fix weak flow from showers and faucets in apartments with low mains pressure, to prevent a combi boiler or water heater from failing to ignite due to insufficient flow, and to speed up water intake in washing machines. Their compact design allows easy installation in tight spaces such as under a sink, next to a combi boiler, or in a bathroom.
Operating modes
- Automatic mode: A built-in flow sensor starts the pump when a tap is opened and stops it when it is closed.
- Continuous (manual) mode: The pump runs as long as it is switched on; on some models, mode selection is done with a switch.
- DC models: Models operating on low voltage such as 24 V are suitable for solar energy systems.
Models with stainless steel casings are more resistant to corrosion and can also be used on hot water lines. The connection size is typically 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch.
Selection and installation
The pump's flow rate should be determined according to the number of taps used simultaneously; low-power models may be sufficient for a single shower. The pump is connected in line in the direction of the arrow on the casing, and fitting valves on both sides simplifies maintenance. The line must be completely filled with water before the first start-up to avoid air pockets. Some water utilities do not permit direct pump connection to the mains; check your local utility's regulations before installation. If a system is needed to supply more than one floor, domestic booster pumps are a more appropriate solution.
Frequently asked questions
How much pressure does a pressure booster pump add?
The pressure added varies by pump model and flow rate; the maximum head and flow rate values are listed on the product page. If the mains pressure is very low, a more powerful model may be required.
Is the pump noisy?
Pumps in this class are generally low-noise. Flexible connections and secure mounting are sufficient to prevent vibration from being transmitted to the wall.
My combi boiler's hot water is intermittent — can a pump fix this?
If the problem is caused by low mains pressure, a pressure booster pump fitted at the combi boiler inlet generally helps. Also have a service technician check for the possibility of a combi boiler fault.
Can it be used with hot water?
Models whose casing and gaskets are rated for hot water can be used; the allowable temperature is stated in the product description.
