What is a fire pump?
Fire pumps are pump groups that supply water at the required flow rate and pressure to sprinkler, fire cabinet, and hydrant systems in the event of a fire. A fire set typically consists of the main pump or pumps, a small jockey pump that continuously maintains system pressure, a control panel, manifolds, valves, and a pressure tank. The main pump can be electric-motor-driven or diesel-engine-driven; diesel-powered sets are preferred to guard against the risk of power failure.
Set types
- Single-pump electric sets: For small and medium-sized buildings.
- Twin- and triple-pump electric sets: For redundant operation and higher capacity.
- Diesel fire groups: Operate independently of electricity and provide water even during power outages.
- Electric + diesel + jockey combinations: Combined solutions for facilities requiring high safety.
The category includes fire booster sets from Sumak and Nortek in various capacities.
How is selection made?
Fire pump selection is based on a design calculation performed according to criteria such as the building's intended use, hazard class, and number of sprinklers and hydrants. Selection must therefore be carried out by a qualified plumbing engineer in accordance with the Regulation on the Protection of Buildings from Fire and the relevant standards. The flow rate (m³/h) and pressure (m) values are taken from the project report to determine the appropriate set. The capacity of the fire storage tank to be used as a water source is also part of this calculation.
Frequently asked questions
What does a jockey pump do?
It compensates for minor pressure drops in the system, keeping it continuously pressurized. This way, the main pump activates only when there is a real demand for water.
Can a fire pump be used in place of a regular booster pump?
No. Fire sets are designed exclusively for fire suppression systems and must be kept separate from domestic water systems.
What information is needed for a quote?
You can request a quote by providing the flow rate and pressure values from the project report, the required number of pumps, and the drive type (electric or diesel).
How is a fire set maintained?
Routine test runs, fuel and battery checks on diesel engines, and panel and sensor inspections must be carried out by qualified personnel.
What power supply does a fire pump operate on?
Electric fire pumps are typically three-phase powered and connected via a dedicated line to ensure uninterrupted power. Diesel pump sets provide additional protection against power outages.
