What is an oil-sealed vacuum pump?
Oil-sealed (oil-lubricated) rotary vane vacuum pumps are pumps that can reach deep vacuum levels thanks to the oil film sealing provided by the vanes in the pumping chamber. They are widely used for evacuating HVAC and refrigeration systems, in laboratory and vacuum furnaces, and in drying and degassing operations. In addition to pumps, the category also includes vacuum pump oils and analog manifold sets used for pressure measurement.
Use in HVAC and refrigeration service
Before charging an HVAC or refrigeration system with refrigerant, the air and moisture inside the system must be removed using a vacuum pump. Residual moisture can combine with the refrigerant and oil to form acid, which can damage the compressor. During evacuation, pressure values are monitored with a manifold set; the adequacy of the vacuum is checked with a suitable vacuum gauge.
Selection criteria
- Flow rate (m³/h): Larger systems are evacuated more quickly with higher flow rate pumps.
- Number of stages: Two-stage pumps reach a deeper vacuum than single-stage ones.
- Connections: Must be compatible with service hoses and manifold connections.
- Portability: Lightweight and compact models are preferred for field service work.
Oil maintenance
Vacuum pump oil traps absorbed moisture and contaminants, so it must be changed regularly. Cloudiness or color change in the oil indicates it is time for a change. Only oils produced specifically for vacuum pumps should be used; different oils such as motor oil reduce the pump's vacuum performance and can cause damage. The pump must be filled so the oil level stays between the marks on the sight glass.
Frequently asked questions
How often should vacuum pump oil be changed?
It depends on usage intensity and the amount of moisture drawn in. The oil should be changed without delay when it becomes contaminated.
What is a manifold set used for?
It is used to measure the system pressure and manage hose connections during evacuation and refrigerant charging.
Is a single-stage pump sufficient?
It may be sufficient for many service applications. Two-stage pumps are preferred for tasks requiring a deeper vacuum.
Is it normal to see oil vapor from the pump exhaust?
Some vapor during operation is normal. If there is excessive oil loss, check the oil level and exhaust filter.
Is there a cordless pump?
Yes; you can browse the cordless vacuum pumps category.
What is an oil-free alternative?
Dry vacuum pumps are used for applications where oil is not desired.
